Quarterback
Jeff Garcia made a few clutch plays with his legs. He made several nice completions to Tai Streets in the 1st half. But Garcia continues to under throw his receivers especially on deeper routes. He badly under threw one pass to Terrel Owens on a sideline route, which Owens had to bat away from the defender to avoid the pass being intercepted. Another pass was intercepted in the 2nd half when Garcia again badly under threw a double covered receiver in the end zone. A team-wide stomach virus slowed Garcia. But, he hasn't looked much better all season. Garcia took himself out of the game so as not to hurt the team. Good Move! Rattay came in and played within the system. He would have made a beautiful deep touchdown pass, but Terrel (I drop at least one pass per game) Owens let it fall between his hands, squandering an opportunity. On the 99-yard drive in the 4th quarter, Rattay connected on 2 3rd down passes to Owens to keep the drive going. GRADE: C

Running backs
Garrison Hearst and Kevan Barlow controlled the clock and the game. Each gained over 90 yards rushing. Barlow looked particularly explosive, slashing through the Redskin defense. Both Hearst and Barlow averaged over 5 yards per carry. This is what the 49er two-back system is supposed to look. GRADE: A+

Wide Receivers
Terrel Owens made a spectacular touchdown run out of what looked like a small gain on an end-around option pass. BUT, Owens continues to drop passes. He dropped a sure TD pass from Tim Rattay in the 2nd half. No other receiver really distinguished himself in the Redskin game. Tai Streets made a few nice grabs during a 2-minute drill at the end of the 1st half. The problem is that after those nice catches he promptly disappeared from the offense. Without the TD run by Owens, the WR's would be getting an F. GRADE: D+

Offensive Line
The 49er O-line dominated the run game. Fiore was having a few problems with Daryl Gardener and Bruce Smith, but Fiore did hold his own. Late in the 2nd half, Fiore was injured and may be out for the year. His position was manned by promising rookie Eric Heitmann who played well on the 99-yard backbreaking drive to put the game away. There were a few breakdowns in pass protection, which resulted in Garcia being clobbered, but overall, the O-line held up well. GRADE: A-

Defensive Line
The D-line finally produced a consistent pass rush. Andre Carter may get consideration for Defensive Player of the Week. Carter had 2 sacks, 5 tackles, and a forced fumble. Carter's great game looks even better knowing that it came against Pro-Bowl LT Chris Samuels. Chike O'keafor also had a sack, continuing his consistent pass rush. The defensive line had a few problems stopping Stephen Davis and the Redskin running game, but overall the Defensive line played very well. GRADE: A-

Linebackers
Jeff Ulbrich returned and played well. Julian Peterson had a big game forcing a fumble and making tackles all over the field. Both Jamie Winborn and Peterson left the game with injuries, which pressed rookie Saleem Rasheed into the lineup where he played well. The injuries caused some confusion, which was evident in that Stephen Davis had a decent day running the ball against the Niner linebackers. GRADE: C+

Secondary
The secondary was unheard from the whole day on Sunday. That is exactly the way the 49er corners wanted it. Plummer may not have had a pass thrown his way all day. Webster played fast and consistently well. The Redskin WR's could have beenn in the witness protection program because NOBODY (least of all, a Redskin QB) COULD FIND THEM! Safety Zack Bronson came up with an interception, and SS Tony Parrish recovered a fumble. Both safeties played very well. The only weakness in the secondary was Ronnie Heard. He gave up the Redskins' only touchdown in addition to giving up a deep pass on a crossing route. GRADE: A-

Special Teams
Cortez was solid on FG's and above average on kick-offs, but the return units were beaten badly on a reverse by the Redskins. Jimmy Williams finally did break a long return. The 49ers' punting needs work. It is barely getting by. GRADE: B

Coaching
Mariucci successfully challenged several calls during a key sequence of plays, which resulted in the Redskins not being awarded an interception and the 49ers getting the ball back on a kickoff mistake by the Skins. The Coaching staff found something that worked and stuck to it all day. That is what good coaches do. They find a way to put their players in a position to win. Still, it must be a looming concern that the passing game is still missing in action with the Rams coming up after the bye week. GRADE: B

Bottom Line
Finally! The team may have found an identity. The run game was superb. The pass rush has surfaced and is creating problems for opposing quarterbacks. The defense is keeping the 49ers in these games. The offense is starting to come around, but the passing game is still very poor and Terrel Owens still needs to work on how to catch the ball. This offense won't scare the Rams, but the defense may keep us in the game long enough for the offense to make some plays.
