| Pro Bowl balloting needs some work!! "Jeremy Spangler" 49ers Paradise Fan Press 11.12.2002 Here we go again....I'm just surfing the internet and I stumble on the Pro Bowl balloting on NFL.COM's website. Yea, I know someone writes an article simular to this one every year, but it does'nt seem to be getting through. Once again I see that Mike "halfback" Alstott is leading the balloting for NFC fullbacks this year. Does this bother anyone else as much as me? I mean, what exactly is the job of a fullback? I always thought it was as a lead blocker for a halfback, a blocker for the quarterback, and a short yardage runner. Apparantly I am mistaken. If you were to judge Mike Alstott's performance by the yards per carry he runs, it would be 3.3. Thats not exactly Pro Bowl numbers. If you were to judge his performance by the yards per carry for his halfback, Micheal Pittman, it would be 3.5. Thats not exactly Pro Bowl numbers either. If you were to judge his performance by the number of sacks allowed on his quarterback, it would be 21. Thats tied for the 8th worst in the league. Or how about 3rd down coversion percentage. 46 percent is'nt a bad rate, but there are 9 teams with a better one. Given the examples that I illustrated, who should be in the Pro Bowl? There is one fullback that comes to mind. You probally have'nt heard of him. Fred Beasley of the San Francisco Forty Niners. Although he does'nt carry the ball very often he has some very good stats as a blocker. The Forty Niners rank #1 in the league in only allowing 8 sacks this season on Jeff Garcia. They also rank #1 in the league in 3rd down conversion percentage. They are tied for 4th in the league in yards per carry. And I'm not sure how many crushing blocks Alstott has had but I've seen some from Beasley that will probally warrant a fine eventually in this ever-wussining league. Well once again this will probally just be another article that no one takes notice of. But I promise you, Fred Beasley will get at least one vote. Mine. 2 Talk about it in the 49ers Forum |
