This Thing Called Loyalty
"Eric"

The dictionary defines the word loyalty as this "Feelings of devoted attachment and affection". This word does not fall into the Niner organizations terminology as far as it's players. Teams cut players left and right, they are called "casualties of the Cap". The league has its rules, and the teams must abide by them, meaning, being under the cap by a certain day. It's tough, but has to be done. But let's look at our players.

First up, Charlie Garner. His career started out by being a role player. Someone who gave another running back a rest, came in on certain plays/situations, and was never the star/starting running back when he was with the Eagles. Then the Niners came knocking. They told him "We want you to be OUR back". Our work horse. It was like going from part-time to full time with benefits. Our line gave him running lanes and he took them. Ran for over 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. The team was thrilled, as the niners had been known as a passing team in the past, now was a dual force. We cut Lawrence Phillips and told Hearst to take his time recovering. All because we had a horse and we didn't need immediate help. We jump started his career. After 2 years, and over 2,000 yards later, knowing we have no money right now, has the nerve to demand 4 million per year. Then, trying to bash the organization, his agent complains that we won't return our call. That's like a salesman selling a screw driver for $1000 and wonders why potential clients aren't calling back. The offer is ridiculous and Walsh has better things to do that return a call to a joke. Garner has forgotten about all the things we've done for him. And he isn't looking into where we'll be in a year or two, where we are under the cap and can afford to offer him a good contract. Now, he's out looking for work, and he's not finding it. Soon, he and his agent are going to come crawling back like a bad dog, with their tail between their legs. I say we send them to their dog house and let them think about it. I don't want Garner back. With an O-Line like ours, any running back can do well for us. Draft one or use what we've got. Jonas and Smith aren't bad, they just haven't had the chance to be the man yet.

Next up, our man, Jerry Rice. As much as I appreciate all that he's done for us, and as classy as it is to step aside so Stokes and Streets and Owens can shine, he makes me sick. We've listened to him whine for 3 years about not getting the ball. That's his competitive nature, fine. But now he says the infamous line "It's not about the money, it's about the desire to play". Bull. If so, release and resign for the league minimum! Oh no, he won't do that. He's poured 16 years into SF an is going to just walk out. I've convinced myself we'll be better without him. But are we? I mean, he caught a lot for being the 2nd man. And we are looking to Stokes, who isn't what we thought, and Streets, recovering from his second "major" injury. I like Curts idea of bringing in Derrick Mayes from Seattle, but that's a different topic, different day. Rice is in a dream land that he hasn't lost a step and he's still the man. And deep down, he's looking for those last few millions before he retires. No loyalty, no pride.

I can go on and on. Scott Gragg has one good year and he wants all kinds of money from a team that is strapped. So where is he looking? Cincinnati!! Oh yeah, go get your money, but we will not see you on Super Bowl Sunday, Pro Bowl Sunday or Hall of Fame (umm day). Brentson Buckner is doing the same and he's not all that good, gets more credit than he deserves.

So, my thoughts on each position. Wide Receiver

Again, bringing in Mayes would help in case someone goes down (DON'T JINX THE TEAM MAN!!). But Owens has had foot problems and Streets is injury prone. And in the draft, late rounds, you'll see Kevin Kasper, super fast wide out from IOWA, yes IOWA. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. He'd be our answer to 4th receiver and kick off returner. Got your doubts? Go look at tapes from Atlanta a couple years back. That blur on the screen? That's Tim Dwight returning it on our butts, from IOWA!!

Running Back

Let Garner go and use what we got, maybe look at Anthony Thomas in second round. We'll be fine if we can keep our line together.

Offensive Line

Contradicts what I just said, but let Gragg go, fat lineman are a dime a dozen anymore. We can pick up a fatty in the later rounds to replace him. Quarterback

Dump Giovanni Carmazzi. He stinks. Stick with Garcia and Rattay. Keep Mirer around as cheap insurance.

Tight End

Greg Clark does not stink. He's not utilized like we did with Brent Jones. That's Mariucci's fault. He's an awesome blocker and he's doing a good job when balls are thrown his way.

Defensive Line

DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT!! We need end help, and defensive tackle wouldn't hurt later either. But we NEED a big time rusher. A freak without a leash.

Linebacker

We have our starting 3, although Mora scared me too about Ulbrich's durability. We have Posey as a backup, not too bad, but we could use one more solid backup. I was one of the first to get excited about Derek Smith, just ask Curt, he listened to me for 2 weeks before we signed him.

Corner Back:

We need some solid pick ups. Not so much for back up, but good enough to push our present starters for starting position. Competition only makes the strong stronger.

Safety

We are fine if we get Schulters and Bronson back. We have good depth with John Keith and Pierson Prioleau.

Well, there's my book on the Niner's present and near future. I hoped I hit a nerve somewhere and you fire back. Not to start a fight, but to give a different point of view. And if you are looking for that perfect gift, give old Idaha potato boy (Curt) a ring, he'll hook you up. Boise stinks! LOL I'm out.
