| Walsh Draft Answers "Tank" 49ers Paradise Fan Press 04.13.2001 There has been a lot of discussion about Bill Walsh’s draft history, but the specific question raised is what happened to the pick he traded? Here is a sketch of what happened to the traded pick and some of the missed opportunities: 1979-pick (#1) traded away (Walsh did not trade this pick)...Cleveland Browns selected Tom Cousineau. Walsh drafted WR James Owens #29 overall, but passed over DT Fred Smearlas (#32), DE Mark Gastineau (#41), and DE Willie Jones (#42). Walsh is forgiven because he draft Joe Montana (#82) and Dwight Clark (#249) later in the draft. 1980-pick (#2) traded away...NY Jets selected WR Johnny "Lam" Jones. OT Anthony Munoz went next (#3). Walsh selected RB/TE Earl Cooper (#13) and DL Jim Stuckey (#20). He chose Cooper over Art Monk (#18). His best pick this year was LB Keena Turner in the second round (#39). Matt Millen went four picks later (#43). 1981-R1/8 - DB Ronnie Lott...enough said. 1982-pick (#27) traded away...New England selected DT Lester Williams. Walsh dropped two spaces and picked up a fourth round pick. He drafted Bubba Paris (#29). I am not sure what transpired, but somehow we traded our #27, #41, #55 and #111 to New England for #29 and ???? (a player?) #41 ended up being LB Andre Tripplett. Walsh traded several other picks this particular year. 1983-pick (#5) traded away...San Diego selected DE Billy Ray Smith, Jr. We got RB Roger Craig with San Diego’s second round pick (49). 1984-R1/24 - LB Todd Shell...but Walsh drafted TE John Frank (#56), OG Guy McIntyre (#73), DT Michael Carter (#121) and SS Jeff Fuller (#139). Walsh chose Shell over DE Doug Smith (#29), LB Keith Browner (#30), DB Scott Case (#32), LB Ron Rivera, and DE Sean Jones (#51). I’ll forgive Walsh for Shell because he hit home runs his next four at bats. 1985-R1/16 - WR Jerry Rice...enough said. 1986-pick (#18) traded away...Dallas selected WR Mike Sherrard. Dallas gave us their #20, which Walsh traded to Buffalo, who selcted OT Will Wolford. Of course, this was arguably Walsh’s greatest draft, netting DE Larry Roberts (#39), FB Tom Rathman (#56), CB Tim McKyer (#64), DE Charles Haley (#96), OT Steve Wallace (#101), DE Kevin Fagan (#102), and CB Don Griffen (#162). 1987-R1/22 - OT Harris Barton; R1/25 - RB Terrance Flagler. Notice, OT Bruce Armstrong went #23, right after Barton, but the only RB of note that was drafted after Flagler was Christian Okoye (#35). 1988-pick (#25) traded away...Raiders selected DE Scott Davis, and we used the newly aquired pick on DE Daniel Stubbs (#33). Walsh missed a chance to draft LB Marcus Cotton(#28), LB Chris Spielman (#29), and CB Eric Allen (#30); but recovered to selcet Pierce Holt (#39) and LB Bill Romanowski (#80). 1989-R1/28 - LB Keith DeLong. A quick survey suggests Walsh didn’t have much choice. 1999-R1 - DT Reggie McGrew. Walsh really wanted DT Anthony McFarland.
2000-R1 - LB Julian Peterson; R1 - CB Ahmed Plummer. This was Terry
Donohue’s draft. Walsh wanted QB Chad Pennington.
