| Divisonal Analysis Part 1 of 7 "Curt"and Eric 49ers Paradise Fan Press 05.19.2001 AFC - East
Indianapolis - Eric - 1st - I like the Colts taking first, it will be back and forth between the Colts and Dolphins, but the Dolphins don't what it takes to knock this team off. The signing of Christian Peter will make this strong defense even better. And the drafting of Reggie Wayne makes this potent offense even more potent. Harrison, Pathon, Wilkins, Green, and now Wayne. I see one of these guys getting released just because they have so much ammo, and all of these guys need to be on the field. They also have a solid QB….Peyton something.
Miami - Curt - 2nd - Miami still has one of the hardest hitting defenses in the league, and their first round draft pick at CB will solidify their only weakness. But, that's just the defense. Lamar Smith is the only person on the offense that I would consider as a threat. Fiedler, Lucas, Huepel, Quinn… these are not the only names I want to have in my QB squad. It's pretty bad when you think that a playoff QB in Feidler could be dethroned by a rookie in Huepel Eric - 2nd - Fletcher gives them that 3rd corner that every team desires. Surtain and Madison are studs, and this only makes these 2 stronger. The drafting of WR Chambers and RB Minor helps an offense that doesn't appear scary. But with McDuffie possibly retiring and going in with the QB's Curt mentioned, I see this as a team that will struggle to take out the mighty Colts.
Buffalo - Curt - 3rd - Buffalo is going to be a tough team to beat this year. Their offense is in no way something to shrug at. Their running attack is tough, and Rob Johnson (as long as he is able to stand) is no slouch. The only problem Buffalo is going to run into is the rest of their division. The only thing that keeps them out of the playoffs this year is a defense that can give up a lot of points, and they didn't do much to try to better themselves. Eric - 4th - Buffalo is a team that will finally have an identity at QB. Flutie is out, Johnson is in, but this team has not bettered itself much at all, with the exception of Clements at CB. This team will get into shootouts at times, but its defense just won't be able to hang with a division that has improved itself in every way. I'd go as far as to say watch for the Patriots to take 1 of 2 in this years meetings. All the while, Johnson and GM Donahoe will be watching the West Coast and watching Flutie shine, and Donahoe will begin questioning if he cut the right QB.
NY Jets - Curt - 4th - J - E - T - S JETS, JETS, JETS… well, that might be the only thing you will hear out of these guys this year. Their team consists of Curtis Martin, and Vinnie Testaverde, and Wayne Chrebet. These are the only proven players returning. Chrebet is a good receiver, but without the breakaway speed, or help on the other side, these guys aren't going anywhere. But that's where Santana Moss comes in. I still say they aren't going to finish above Buffalo, but I guess I wouldn't be upset to see the rookie make an impact and put them into the 3rd position. Eric - 3rd This is where I disagree with Curt greatly, and it doesn't happen much. The Jets signed a guy names Santana Moss. His speed is as sultry as the musician Santana, and his game day ability is as devastating as another Moss in the NFL. If Miami begins having QB problems, I see the Jets sliding into 2nd, especially if they lure Jerry Rice over. But this prediction is an "as of right now" look, so I have them battling for 2nd, settling for 2nd or 3rd.
New England Patriots - Curt - 5th - Man, I feel for these guys. Drew Bledsoe is a GREAT drop back QB, but unfortunately, there's no one to throw to!!! Bill Belichick was not the answer for this team, but hey, it's their dime. Honestly, with Bledsoe being their only bright spot, I guess that's enough about them. Eric - 5th - These guys have a list of newly signed people longer than any team I've looked at. Yet, you look at the names, and nothing. They signed Bert Emanuel, who I feel can contribute. Troy Brown and Terry Glenn started to show flashes of helping each other out, complimenting each other. And Richard Seymour is a solid DL. But it will take more than this to get out of the cellar. No threat at RB. The top 2 RB's from last year didn't COMBINE for 1000 yards. And Edwards is like Garrison Hearst of the Niners, a BIG question mark.
