| Divisonal Analysis Part 1 of 7 "Curt"and Eric 49ers Paradise Fan Press 05.20.2001 AFC - Central
Baltimore Ravens - Curt - 1st - Baltimore's pick-up of Grbac was one of the best free-agent signings in the NFL. Baltimore's offense has finally become complete with the addition of a QB who has the potential of tossing for 4,000 yards. I see the AFC going through Baltimore this year, instead of Baltimore going through the AFC like last year. For their 16 opponents, all I can say is good luck. Eric - 2nd -The Ravens got the stud QB they needed to get their offense jump started and give the #1 defense in the league from last year some support…..in baseball, they'd call in "run support." But that #1 defense from last year, I fear, was last year. This year, first of all, teams will be looking for weaknesses in this defense and exploiting them. Nobody expected this team to be that good on defense. This year teams will be looking for them. Second, I feel it's going to take Grbac a year to get comfortable with this team. He is a different style quarterback in a new system It took him a year to get comfortable after leaving San Francisco to KC, so I think they'll have some growing pains to endure.
Tennessee Titans - Curt - 2nd - Tennessee is going to have to get used to just barely missing out. I honestly think that the Titans are 1 player away from getting to the big show again. And they brilliantly drafted 2 players for that position. WR has been what this team has needed since Jeffires retired years ago. Dyson is good, but they need to get that 1 key player on the outside. And with as tough as Baltimore is going to be… it's going to seem just like that Super Bowl win they missed out on… by 1 yard. Eric - 1st - I think that Dyson is ready to come back and make an impact. Add that to Mason and possibly their draft pick McCareins and Wycheck, you have a potent 3-4 receiver set. Then factor in George and McNair, and this team is as good or a little better than last year. The change comes on the defensive side. Curt thinks they are 1 player away from being huge, and I think Kevin Carter is that man. This defense is vastly improved, and Dyson's little brother at corner makes this defense very strong again.
Jacksonville Jaguars - Curt - 3rd - Pretty much the rest of the Central is not going to be any kind of threat. Mark Brunell will have a decent season, but the two biggest question marks are Jimmy Smith… is he going to live? And Fred Taylor, this guy can't complete a season, just like… wait, no… No Dennis Miller-type comments yet. Eric - 5th - Jimmy Smith hurting again... Mark Brunell can't find someone to protect his butt. Nobody to throw to. Taylor can't play an entire season. And after Marcus Stroud, didn't help themselves in the draft very much. Jacksonville… welcome to Salary Cap-ville. It's a sorry place to be.
Cincinnati Bengals - Curt - 4th - Cincinnati made lots of news with their free agent signings this year, but all I see is . . . nothing. Jon Kitna - I can see him becoming the starter, but I think they are only +1 in the win/loss for that pick up. Corey Dillon - if this guy is happy, I'm sure he'll have another 200 yard game or two this season. Who knows, if Warrick finally busts out, and if they can find a QB to put the ball in the air to open it up for Dillon, they'll have a good foundation for next year. But this is all for naught if your defense isn't going to hold the opponent to fewer points than you are able to muster. Law of the game boys, and I don't think you'll be able to compete with folks named McNair, George, Grbac, and Mr. Ray Lewis. Eric - 4th - I like the thought of Cincinnati moving up out of the cellar. And they just might have the talent to do it. Kitna should come in and win the starting job….or push Akili Smith to his max potential. Warrick needs to show his complete potential, and Dillon needs to earn his money. With the additions of Justin Smith, the defense looks a little better.
Pittsburgh Steelers - Curt - 5th - These guys have so much promise. Bettis is probably the best smash-mouth running back in the league, but with Kordell throwing interceptions for more than ½ of the season, it doesn't matter how many yards Bettis runs for. The only receiver they have is Burress, even though they are looking at Thigpen again. I'm sorry, but I just can't bring myself to say these guys are going anywhere while #10 is at the helm. Eric - 3rd - The defense is making some changes, making this team a force to reckon with. Mike Jones signed, along with draftees Kendrell Bell, a good LB and Hampton, a strong DT. The resigning of WR Blackwell, along with Buress and Ward and possibly Pickens makes this offense sound again. Bettis and his back up (however you say/spell his name) are back, so I look for this team to be on an upswing.
Cleveland Browns - Curt - 6th - Cleveland could be on the upswing this year. Tim Couch has learned his lesson about hitting his teammates on the helmet during practice, plus, bringing in Butch Davis will make everybody happy. The Browns will be rebuilding this year, and if they pick up some offensive weapons, could start beating more teams than just the Steelers. Eric - 6th - Another season in the slammer for the Browns. Couch is a good QB, although his team makes him look bad. No good receivers (come on, Patton and Johnson?), top 3 rushers combines for less than 1000 yards, their glimpse of hope for running back retired shortly after signing on (Enis). Warren was a good pick in the draft, as was Quincy Morgan, but this team is not headed anywhere anytime soon. ark.
