| Draft Sleepers: Are They Next "Jordan" 49ers Paradise Fan Press 05.16.2002 Every year, there are some players drafted at each position that in the later rounds as sleepers that have all of the attributes to be a star, and with me, it seems like a guarentee rather than a projection. Here now, is my idea of WHO'S NEXT (sorry Goldberg): QB Jeff Kelley, Mississippi State -Underrated his entire career. Played in lots of mud baths in his career, so it's no wonder that his balls had a tendency to wobble in home games. But this guy showed great smarts, great overall mechanics, while smashing all of Brett Favre's records. That's no small feat, obviously. Kelley has a decent stature, but more impressive to me was his arm strength. This guy has a ROCKET when he's on. He can put an incredible amount of zip on his passes, as he winds back and just shoots a missle out to a receiver. The scouts will tell you the exact opposite, but they're seeing him in his mud bath games, not in fairly clear weather when he's on. I've seen this guy at his best, and he could be next to take over and become a dominant starting QB in the NFL. RB Clinton Portis, MIA -The fact that he was a back taken by Denver should've been enough for me, but just watching him play and then visualizing how well he'll do in Denver cinched it. Portis is an absolute workhorse with all of the tools to dominate with the Broncos in Shannahan's offense. The Broncos will keep Terrell Davis and use him as their starter next year, and obviously he'll be the feature back and rush for around 1500 yards, and Mike Anderson will likely stay as a backup. But Olandis "injury" Gary is headed out, and Clinton Portis is ready to sit on the sidelines, waiting for the time to come on to the field and bust it open. FB Jamar Martin, FB, Ohio State -Not really a sleeper since most thought him as the best fullback in the draft. But this guy is somewhat like Fred Beasley and Lorenzo Neal combined. He's a devastating blocker. Like Neal, he has an extremely WIDE body and struggles to control himself, but also like Neal he keeps his shoulders squared and does a good job of driving on blocks. Like Neal, he doesn't play with very good leverage and dip. Unlike Neal, however, and like BEASLEY, he has explosive snap into contact and great pop. It's not Beasley pop, but it's the next best thing. And he is POWERFUL, like Beasley. He's not muscular like Beasley, but he is overwhelming with a huge T-H-U-D in his blocks. WR WR Kahlil Hill, Iowa -Son of former NFL star Drew Hill, has a natural feel for his position and a great work ethic. Somebody got a MAJOR STEAL. TE Tracey Wistrom, NEB -He's Grant Wistrom's brother. The blood lines are good for the Wistroms. You know that this guy is a hard worker, and no scouts could ever come up with a good reason why this guy has such a great pair of hands and is such a good reciever. A starting tight end in the future and a darned good one at that. Will be one of the better ones in today's game where there isn't a very good class of tight ends. Rocky Bernard, DT -The Seahawks' one good pick. This guy is a STUD defensive tackle, by far and away the best pass rushing defensive tackle in this year's class. He's quick, strong, explosive, plays with great leverage and inside technique. Explosive off the ball, great penetrator, disruptor, and has great speed and a great motor. He's explosive enough to be a Pro Bowl player at the NFL level. He's been an NFL player in college for a while now. Kevin Curtis, FS, Texas Tech -He's a complete football player with great size, good speed and intangibles, a great work ethic, and good cover skills. The scouts don't know crap about safeties in coverage. This guy is a natural flying ball hawk and a big-time low-to-the-ground hitter. He's got range, he's got great boundary awareness, and he got everyone lined up at the college game. The biggest thing, though, is his know-how and intelligence. He'll get everyone lined up. Talk about it in the 49ers Forum |
