| NINER Spec Times "Mikal" 49ers Paradise Fan Press 07.18.2002 The off-season for all of us NINER Fans is a time of speculation, hope, anxiety, and well just plain guessing. For me this is the time of year that I search fervently for any tidbit of NINER news, and when I cannot find it….well, I speculate. Our Beloved Team is passed the ‘Dark-Years’ and has recovered from cap insanity…..in a big hurry. To prevent us from re-entering cap-hell T-Don has held strong, not to be tempted by free agencies’ high priced / quick fix big names. He has held to his plans not to overpay and hock away the future of this Team as was the practice of previous management. The lure of the 1st SIX to go with the 1st Five has to be tremendously compelling. So what is the new plan? Don’t overpay free agents, and draft well. It’s working. 12-4 is an extraordinary new beginning! This off-season has only seen the loss of one NINER free agent, Lance Schulters, and that was his own doing. While Schulters held out, the same offer was given to Parrish formerly with the Bears. Parrish accepted, and Schulters is now making less than he was offered. Parrish possesses similar ‘Hard-Hitter’ style, but I question his coverage skills. He is very fast and should adapt well, but Schulters will be missed this season. The other less mentioned key addition is the signing of former GB DT Flanigan. This guy will make an immediate impact on DT rotation, as will Moran formerly of StL on DE rotation. The ‘D’ remains intact, and will be better this year than last. Those shut-outs were no fluke!! The biggest question that remains is the lack of depth @ corner. Plummer has become a great corner, and Webster is good, but if Rumph steps it up this year Web becomes #2……At LB there is enough depth and speed!. Expect big numbers from Carter and Engleburger this coming season as both players have worked very hard to pack on the extra muscle pounds and work on their technique.
The off-season goal of improving the ‘O’ Line was accomplished with the signing of Pro-Bowler Ron Stone. He will be reunited with Scott Grag also formerly of the NYG. This gives Jeff more protection, and he needs it. There are no proven QB’s behind Jeff Garcia. Jeff is a warrior, but let’s not tests fate too often. The Team is flooded with RB depth, so much that Jonas Lewis was cut. I will miss him. Don’t be surprised to see Lewis picked up quickly by another team. With Willie Jackson going to Atlanta (of all places) the need for another WR threat remains unless one currently on the roster (besides Owens) steps it up. Owens is a stud, but another serious threat is needed. I still believe that Streets has a shot, and it is rumored that Cedric Wilson is looking great in camp. So let’s speculate. What is wrong, if anything with the starting ‘O’ line? Well, nothing. Unless we lose our starting QB, WR, TE, etc….I predict that we will split games with StL this season. They will not get us for two again. We will be in the play-offs again, and we will make it passed the second round. GO NINERS!!
