| Sounding Off May 17, 2002 By The Staff of 49ers Paradise
This week, we ask: Bryan's Repsonse: My pick has to go to receiver Nate Jackson. Maybe it’s because Bill Walsh loves the guy, maybe it’s because I want to find anyone who can improve our passing game or maybe it’s just because I want a Jackson, any Jackson at receiver for the team. Seriously though, from what I’ve read it sounds like Jackson is an extremely solid receiver who lacks the speed to really excel at the position. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackson makes the roster, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the 49ers try and mold him into a tight end in the same way they did with Eric Johnson last season. There’s simply too much talent here to go to waste. Syd's Repsonse: I like Ryan Fletcher from Hofstra, this school seems to be the corridor to the talent pool of un-drafted free agents for the 49er's. I would like someone to put the heat on veteran bust Reggie McGrew at that. Although I do like Ken Simonton out of Oregon, we really are all set at the running back position. He is still a great prospect, especially on special teams but I feel we need more competition and rotation depth at defensive tackle. If anything to light a fire there. Fletcher follows a great tackle in Dave Fiore that came to the 49er's in 1996. He seems to have the finesse and abilites that signal promise in making the transition to the professional ranks. Keeping the defensive front four fresh and consistent will require depth and ability to replace premier starters from time to time. At this time we are borderline on being able to do that effectively. Fletcher makes that a distince possibility. SuperZim's Repsonse: SuperZim will sound off soon. Eric's Repsonse: Nate Jackson is the guy I'm pulling for. I get tired of always hearing these 1st, 2nd, 3rd round picks getting the spotlight. I'm pulling for someone who has to earn their seat next to Owens and and Willie Jackson. Can I say I know where Menlo college is? NO. Can I say I've heard of Nate Jackson? NO. All the more reason to pull for him. James'Response: Ken Simonton. I think he could help the team in the RB area. And possibly play on special teams a bit. We have been needing a return man for the last few years and he could definitley try for that spot on the roster. Cory's Response: Ken Simonton is my man. I hope he finds a place on the depth chart. He was a great RB and I think he could help the 49ers in the return game.
